Yukon River
White Water Class: I (two Class II rapids)Overview:
The Yukon River's tantalizing blend of scenery, wildlife and history makes it the most popular river to canoe in Canada's North. Nearly all the stampeders of the Klondike Gold Rush of 100 years ago traveled this river, and historical relics are seen in many locations along the route to Dawson City.
A day trip from Marsh Lake to Whitehorse is possible. In spring, thousands of water birds gather to wait in the icefree zone at the end of the lake as they migrate to their nesting areas. At the end, you paddle through the once dreaded Miles Canyon.
The section from Whitehorse to Carmacks begins with the vast Lake Laberge (50 km), which can be difficult to paddle as strong winds and resulting big waves can impede progress.
The next section of the river is the most beautiful (Also called Thirty Mile River). The rest of the route to Carmacks is scattered with many historical relics, including the SS Evelyn and the wreck of the SS Klondike 1.
Shortly downstream of Carmacks are the infamous Five Finger Rapids. The Five Fingers and the Rink Rapids are the only challenging parts of the river. Past Dawson City, the Yukon winds 2,000 kilometers through Alaska to the the Bering Sea. Every year, there are some adventurers who conquer this section.
